IVORY - SCOURGE OF AFRICA
Hunter Books
"JL26088" Harper, N.Y. 1931, stated 1st edition (code letters K-F) 256 pages, illustrated with B & W photographs, map on front endpaper The author resided four and one-half years in Zanzibar at the turn of the century and during that period bought hundreds of tons of ivory. The quest for ivory turned thousands of square miles of fertile country into a wilderness of rapine, plunder and fire-blackened ruin. Hundreds of thousands of mighty elephants were slain, but for every elephant slain for its ivory a dozen human lives were wrecked or snuffed out in the search, the seizure, and the transport of it. Zanzibar was the capital from whence Tippoo Tib and the the Arab raiders set out on their inhuman errands. The brown original cover and spine label are unfaded and intact..
