Putnam's Sons, New York, 1900. This is set # 176 with an original Manuscript leaf entirely in the hand of Roosevelt, bound into Volume 1. Quarto. In four volumes, Volume I: xxvii, [3], 352; Volume II: vii, [3], 427; Volume III: ix, [3] 339; and Volume IV: [3], 363pp. plus five folding maps and 103 plates. Beautifully bound ¾ original green (unfaded) morocco leather over marbled boards; three raised bands with gilt lettering within the two compartments. Uncommon to this publication is the fact the spines are virtually unfaded. Top edges gilt, bright and unmarked, all others uncut. Elaborate green marbled endpapers, matching the cloth material on the covers. Internally, the set is Very Fine save for some minor and scattered foxing to a few preliminary and early pages, not affecting text, illustrations or text and the upper right corners of 2 of the preliminary pages of Volume 4 at one time had been folded, leaving crease marks, not affecting text. Externally the boards and spines are clean and without lean. Some minor archival reinforcement repair has been done to the outer front hinges of Volumes I and II. Overall, this is a Near Fine set. This edition, printed in an edition of only 500 copies, brings through the year 1999 the details of books by hunters, pioneers, explorers and settlers whose exploits are sought after by book collectors. The number of entries is nearly double those of Czech's earlier book which covered books published only through 1950 and is now long out of print. His detailed descriptions of the books make this new and updated edition an essential tool for the collector or serious reader of African adventure titles.
