This is his very first publication which was originally done in wraps for the AZ Game & Fish Department. 4to. 35pp printed on one side plus 4 page prelims and full page sketch illustration of a standing grizzly frontispiece. Includes full page photo of the last grizzly taken in Arizona in 1922 with an estimated weight of 800 pounds. The original copy came from a library which is evidenced by a number and letter stamped on the middle of the title page and one set of 4 numerals on the bottom verso of page 34. Deep brown contemporary linen boards with paper label on spine. An unusual and exceedingly rare publication.  ID#: 3713

"A true story of adventure in one of the wildest places on earth, told by a hunter who fights giant man-killing jungle cats, armed only with a spear." Laid in the book are three 5" x 7" B & W photos, one of Siemel while on a promotional book tour in the U.S.A. Another of Siemel meeting with movie producer Samuel Fuller and actress Marjorie Hellen about a possible film. The 3rd photo was taken in their jungle camp, of Sasha's wife, Edith, his head-man, Lauro, and a close friend of the Siemels, Helen Blanchard Post (Post Cereals) who made several trips to Brazil to be with them. The book is tight and clean. There are no internal marks or inscriptions. The jacket is complete and shows signs of normal shelfwear. First printing copies of the first edition, and with the dustjacket have become very scarce. Near Fine/Very Good Plus.  ID#: 3641

Homer Pickens was one of the great houndsmaen of the Southwest during the 20s, 30s and 40s for bear and lion. He and his brother Albert also trapped many wolves. These are Pickens' reminiscences of his years tramping and riding across the state as an officer of the New Mexico Game & Fish Department and other agencies. Homer rose from predator control officer to become Chief Game Warden for the state of New Mexico. It was he who took Smokey the bear, as a cub, to Washington after he was rescued from a forest fire. Foreword by John Burnham, frontis. of dall sheep in color and also paintings and drawings in B & W by Carl Rungius. Extensively illustrated with B & W photos by the author. Covers the author's expeditions of 1922 to Mt. McKinley, 1925 along the north side of the Alaskan range to Mt. Dall, 1926 to Rainy Pass and further exploration in 1930. Much on big game especially mountain sheep, caribou, bear, moose, others. One of the great classics. Gilt lettering and caribou horns on cover and gilt lettering on spine bright, the blue front cover shows no fading but the spine is somewhat sunned. Map endpapers, inserted map intact. There is a previous owner inscription and a couple of the introductory pages were roughly cut open on the lower edge. Overall a Very Good Plus copy of a scarce work.  ID#: 3500

A generous portion of the book is devoted to lion hunts; another to elephants, hippos, rhinos and buffaloes; a third to antelopes and their kind; and a fourth to miscellaneous aspects of the savage life of jungle and veldt. Demidoff and his wife, accompanied by St. George Littledale, embarked on a shooting expedition to the Altai range after viewing a number of trophies collected by Major Cumberland displayed at the taxidermy emporium of Rowland Ward. They traveled to the Ob River in Siberia, then on to the Altai. In the Tchagan-Burgaza Valley, Ovis ammon were sighted and bagged. The march continued into Mongolia, crossing the Tchagan-Kol River and into the Olonur Valley where ibex and and more Ovis ammon were collected. Riding to the Kosh-Agatch Plain, antelope were added to the bag, with additional stalks after maral and roe deer."" No dust jacket.
