Bonington, Chris
KONGUR, CHINA'S ELUSIVE SUMMIT
"T28893" Hodder and Stoughton, London, first printing 1982, large octavo, 224 pages, profusely illustrated in color and B & W and with several maps. The British Mount Kongur expedition of 1981 was the first to be allowed into China. They chose a 7,719 metre peak in Southern Xinjiang provinve. The climbing team of Chrisd Bonington, Peter Boardman, Al Rouse and Joe Tasker were at first halted by appalling weather, by frighteningly unconsolidated snow, and the sheer deceptive scale of the final summit pyramid at whose foot they turned back. On their second attempt they spent four nights immured in snow 'coffins' waiting for the storm to subside before making the final successful push for the summit. Has a previous owner inscription on the front endpaper. Dust jacket is price-clipped. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE TITLE PAGE. Very Fine. ID#: 4232
