KONGUR, CHINA'S ELUSIVE SUMMIT
Hunter Books
"T28893" Hodder and Stoughton, London, first printing 1982, large octavo, 224 pages, profusely illustrated in color and B & W and with several maps. The British Mount Kongur expedition of 1981 was the first to be allowed into China. They chose a 7,719 metre peak in Southern Xinjiang provinve. The climbing team of Chrisd Bonington, Peter Boardman, Al Rouse and Joe Tasker were at first halted by appalling weather, by frighteningly unconsolidated snow, and the sheer deceptive scale of the final summit pyramid at whose foot they turned back. On their second attempt they spent four nights immured in snow 'coffins' waiting for the storm to subside before making the final successful push for the summit. Has a previous owner inscription on the front endpaper. Dust jacket is price-clipped. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE TITLE PAGE. Very Fine.  ID#: 4232

THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE
Hunter Books
"T30890" Stein and Day, N.Y. 1973, first edition, 352 pages, profusely illustrated in color and B & W, maps. The hardest way up the highest mountain in the world. In the autumn of 1972 a group of expert mountain climbers led by Chris Bonington attempted to scale the most difficult and as yet unclimbed south west face of Mount Everest. The group had two aims: first, to challenge the highest mountain in the world via the hardest route; second to do so not by a vast expedition with hundreds of Sherpas but with the smallest team possible. After months of labor, including the death pf one of the members of the team, they came within 600 feet of the summit but were unable to make the final sprint because of certain knowledge that they would die in the attempt. SIGNED BY BONINGTON on the title page. Dust jacket and book are Very Fine.  ID#: 4237
