Hunter Books
[W26339] George Ronald, Wheatley and Oxford 1953, 1st edition, 272 pages, many historic B & W photos. Publishing date has been blacked out on the back of the title page and this has bled through somewhat to the title page. Coming to Africa in 1898, Varian was involved throughout his lifetime with the pioneer railroads and under the influence of Cecil Rhodes. He eventually was chief engineer for the Benguela Railroad. During this time, he made several exploratory surveys. Big game and hunting was a constant interest and two unique animals were named after him - the royal or giant sable of Angola with the longest horns and the Angolan dik-dik with the shortest horns. Map endpapers. Lacks dust jacket Book is Very Good Plus.  ID#: 1657
