"BL26852" Edward Arnold, London & N.Y. 1896, first edition, 636 pages, TEG, illustrated, two inserted maps intact, translated by Major F.R. Wingate. ""A Personal Narrative of Fighting and Serving the Dervishes 1879 - 1895."" One of the most highly regarded works on the wars in the Sudan during this period highlighted by the death of Gordon and the fall of Khartoum. The maroon cover is unfaded and the gilt camel vignette on the cover and lettering on the spine are bright and intact. Moderate cover wear. The contents are tight and clean. There is a previous owner inscription dated 1899 on the title page and a bookplate on the front pastedown. Howevere for a book this old it is an unusually nice copy. Very Good Plus.  ID#: 4422

Coming to Africa in 1898, Varian was involved throughout his lifetime with the pioneer railroads and under the influence of Cecil Rhodes. He eventually was chief engineer for the Benguela Railroad. During this time, he made several exploratory surveys. Big game and hunting was a constant interest and two unique animals were named after him - the royal or giant sable of Angola with the longest horns and the Angolan dik-dik with the shortest horns.
